Your Dream Backyard Starts With Proper Drainage
A beautiful backyard starts long before the patio, sod, plants, outdoor kitchen, or artificial turf goes in. It starts with proper drainage and water management.
Heavy rain can quickly expose problems around your property. Standing water, muddy areas, erosion, overflowing gutters, soggy lawns, and water collecting near your foundation are all signs that your yard may need a better drainage system. At Hannah Outdoor Designs, drainage is one of the first things we evaluate when designing an outdoor space because everything else depends on controlling the water.
1. Keep Your Gutters Clean
Your gutters are the first line of defense against unwanted water around your home. Leaves, pine needles, and debris can clog gutters and downspouts, causing water to overflow directly beside your foundation and landscaping.
We recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year, and more often if your home is surrounded by mature trees.
Proper gutter maintenance helps protect your:
Foundation
Landscaping
Sod
Retaining walls
Patios and hardscapes
2. Connect Downspouts to Solid PVC Drainage Pipe
Instead of allowing downspouts to dump water directly beside the house, we recommend connecting them to solid PVC drainage pipe.
At Hannah Outdoor Designs, we prefer installing cleanouts at downspouts so the drainage system can be accessed and maintained in the future. The solid PVC pipe can then carry roof runoff away from the house and discharge it safely toward the front or rear of the property.
Depending on the property, the system may terminate with a pop-up emitter or another properly designed discharge point.
Moving water away from the house is one of the most important parts of a properly designed yard drainage system.
3. Fix Standing Water With the Right Drainage Solution
Not every drainage problem should be solved the same way.
If water is collecting in low areas of the yard, the solution may include the following:
French drain to collect subsurface water and help dry saturated soil.
Catch basin or box drain to collect surface water in low areas.
Channel drain to capture runoff across patios, driveways, pool decks, or other hardscapes.
Grading and drainage improvements to redirect water before it becomes a problem.
The goal isn't simply to collect water. The goal is to capture it, control it, and move it to a safe discharge location.
4. Slow Down Water and Protect Your Yard
Once water is moving in the right direction, the landscape itself can help control runoff and erosion.
Depending on the property, we may use:
Sod to stabilize soil and reduce erosion.
Mulch to protect planting beds and exposed soil.
Decorative gravel to create durable, low-maintenance areas.
River rock for dry creek beds and natural drainage channels.
Rip rap in areas experiencing heavier runoff or erosion.
Artificial turf to create clean, usable spaces in areas where maintaining natural grass is difficult.
The right combination helps slow water down, stabilize the soil, and create a cleaner, more usable yard.
Build the Drainage First. Build the Dream Backyard Second.
You can install the most beautiful patio, retaining wall, outdoor kitchen, landscaping, or artificial turf in Atlanta—but if the drainage underneath and around it isn't designed correctly, problems can eventually follow.
That's why water management is one of the most important factors in every Hannah Outdoor Designs project.
Before we focus on what your backyard will look like, we focus on where the water is coming from, where it's going, and how we're going to manage it.
Your dream backyard starts with drainage.
If you're dealing with standing water, erosion, muddy areas, downspout runoff, or drainage problems in Metro Atlanta, let Hannah Outdoor Designs design a solution that protects your property while creating an outdoor space you'll enjoy for years to come.
