When it comes to building a retaining wall that lasts, the materials you don’t see are just as important as the ones you do. Homeowners often focus on the style and color of the wall blocks, but the real strength of a modular block retaining wall comes from what’s inside and behind it—specifically the #57 stone.

At Hannah Outdoor Designs, we use industry best practices to ensure every wall is structurally sound, and that starts with proper stone placement.

🔍 What Is #57 Stone?

#57 stone is a clean, angular crushed stone usually about ¾” in size. It’s commonly used in construction and drainage projects because of its excellent compaction and water movement properties. Unlike smaller gravel or rounded pea gravel, #57 stone interlocks and stays in place while still allowing water to pass through.

🏗️ Why It’s Used in Modular Block Walls

1. Fills Hollow Cores for Strength

Most modular wall blocks are designed with hollow cores. Filling these cores with #57 stone adds significant weight and stability to the wall. This prevents blocks from shifting over time and increases the overall strength of the structure.

2. Provides Proper Drainage

Water is one of the biggest threats to retaining walls. If water builds up behind a wall, it creates hydrostatic pressure that can push the wall outward or cause failure. Using #57 stone as backfill ensures water flows freely through the stone and into the drainage system, instead of building up behind the wall.

3. Reduces Settlement and Movement

The angular shape of #57 stone means it locks together when compacted, minimizing settlement over time. This helps the wall remain stable and level, even after years of heavy rains and ground movement.

4. Distributes Loads Evenly

By filling cores and backfilling with stone, pressure from the soil is distributed more evenly across the wall. This reduces stress on individual blocks and extends the life of the wall.

⚠️ What Happens If You Skip It

  • Walls may lean, bulge, or collapse due to water pressure.

  • Blocks can shift or settle unevenly without the stabilizing stone core.

  • Drainage issues can lead to erosion around the wall.

  • The lifespan of the wall is dramatically shortened.

Skipping proper stone installation may save money up front, but it almost always results in costly repairs later.

A modular block retaining wall is only as good as its foundation and drainage. Using #57 stone in both the hollow cores of the blocks and as backfill is a critical step to ensure your wall is strong, stable, and built to last.

At Hannah Outdoor Designs, we don’t cut corners—we build retaining walls the right way, blending aesthetics with engineering so you can enjoy your landscape worry-free for years to come.
