Building a deck is one of the best ways to extend your outdoor living space—but safe, sturdy, and properly built deck stairs are just as important as the deck itself. Poorly constructed stairs can be unsafe, uncomfortable to walk on, and even lead to structural issues over time.
At Hannah Outdoor Designs, we take pride in crafting outdoor spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful.
📏 1. Start with a Solid Plan
Every set of deck stairs starts with accurate measurements and planning. We begin by determining:
Total rise: The height from the ground to the top of the deck.
Ideal riser height: Typically 7" to 7 ¾" per step for comfortable walking.
Tread depth: Usually around 10" to 12" for stability.
🪚 2. Choose the Right Materials
Quality materials are key for long-lasting stairs. We recommend:
Pressure-treated lumber for framing and stringers (to resist rot and insects).
Composite decking or hardwood treads for low maintenance and durability.
Choosing weather-resistant materials ensures your stairs stand up to Georgia’s humidity, rain, and temperature swings.
📐 3. Cut and Install the Stringers Correctly
The stringers (the angled supports that hold each step) are the backbone of your stairs.
We carefully mark and cut the stringers using precise measurements so that every riser and tread is identical.
Stringers must be securely attached to the deck frame and supported at the base with a concrete pad.
🧱 4. Add a Stable Base and Support
The base of your deck stairs is just as important as the top. We build a solid landing—often made of concrete, or pavers—to give the stairs a level foundation. This prevents movement, erosion, and uneven settling over time.
🔩 5. Install Treads, Risers, and Railings
Each tread and riser must be perfectly level, consistent, and secure. Uneven steps can be uncomfortable—or even dangerous.
Finally, we install sturdy handrails that meet local code requirements.
Properly built deck stairs combine safety, strength, and design. From accurate measurements to durable materials and solid craftsmanship, every step matters.
At Hannah Outdoor Designs, we build outdoor living spaces that are engineered to last and designed to impress—from decks and patios to retaining walls and outdoor kitchens.
