More Than Just a Hole in the Ground: Understanding the Flow Well

We’ve all been there: a heavy spring downpour turns your beautiful backyard into a temporary swamp. While a "moat" might sound medieval and cool, it’s usually the last thing you want for your foundation or your landscaping.

At Hannah Outdoor Designs, we get a lot of questions about how to manage runoff effectively. One of the most efficient, "hidden" heroes of drainage is the Flow Well (often referred to as a dry well).

Here is everything you need to know about this underground powerhouse.

What Exactly is a Flow Well?

A Flow Well is a sustainable, subterranean structural well used to manage stormwater runoff. Instead of letting water pool on your lawn or dumping it into the municipal sewer system, a Flow Well collects the water and allows it to naturally and slowly dissipate into the ground.

Think of it as an underground staging area for rainwater. It’s usually a large, perforated plastic tank buried deep in the earth, surrounded by gravel.

How It Works: The Step-by-Step

  1. Collection: Water is diverted from your roof gutters, driveway, or low spots in your yard via underground drainage pipes.

  2. Storage: This water flows into the Flow Well tank. Because the tank is hollow, it can hold a significant volume of water during the peak of a storm.

  3. Infiltration: The walls of the Flow Well are perforated. As the surrounding soil allows, the stored water slowly leaks out through these holes and back into the water table.

  4. Overflow Management: If the well fills up completely during a massive storm, most systems are designed with an emitter or overflow pipe to safely direct excess water away from your home.

Why Your Landscape Needs One

Why bother digging a hole for a Flow Well instead of just using a traditional French drain or a surface trench?

  • Foundation Protection: By capturing water before it reaches your home’s perimeter, you significantly reduce the risk of basement leaks and soil erosion near your foundation.

  • Eco-Friendly Irrigation: It recharges the local groundwater. Rather than sending clean rainwater into a dirty sewer, you’re putting it back into the earth where your trees and plants can eventually reach it.

  • Space Saver: Because the system is vertical and underground, it’s perfect for smaller yards where you don't have room for a sprawling rain garden or a retention pond.

  • Aesthetic Bliss: Once installed, you won’t even know it’s there. You can plant grass or small perennials right over the top of it.
